Fruit stall in Sainte-Suzanne, a town near Saint Denis. The fruit inheritance of Reunion Island is diverse, almost all fruit species were introduced into it. 138 different fruit species were listed, of which only five are cultivated for commercial purposes: mango, litchi, pineapple, banana and citrus. What remains of the fruit inheritance only grown in the gardens, or only found in nature. CIRAD researchers wanted to diversify the island fruit production with a new fruit. Given the wealth evoked before, seemed pointless to introduce a new species because species already present (such as Hylocereus) do not have to be acclimated, which saves time.
