A diver on the beach of the island of Mabul Pualu next to the nearby Sipadan Water Village Resort. The reefs around Mabul have a great reputation for its great bio-diversity. One of the best dive sites is the Wall of Lobsters. Many divers and photographers come to photograph macro Mabul for its incredible variety of life underwater macro species. The island has white sand beaches and a fishing filipino people full of colors. Mabul is home to the most amazing sea creatures, hawksbill turtles and green sea turtle, Nudibranchia, crocodile fish, octopus, frog fish, mandarin fish, mantis prawns, cuttlefish, blue-ringed octopus, lobster and garden eels
Pualu Mabul Island. Several kids have fun fishing along the banks located in the fishing village. Mabul is a tiny village of fishermen living in wooden houses with pillars built directly on the reef, like a stilt, joined together through wooden walkways running through the life of the people, with shops, school ... Another way to enjoy the diving in Sipadan is housed in one of the resorts that are in the neighboring islands of Mabul and Kapalai. There are options of various types, beach bungalow or bungalow on the water. Because the quota system established can not guarantee 100% Sipadan diving every day.Certainly described as a marvel of prestigious naturalists offers Sipadan off Borneo's incredible diving. After the overnight ban on Sipadan and the quota system, how to ensure the greatest possible number of dives in Sipadan is at sea. Also delves into the neighboring islands of Mabul and Kapalai.

Sipadan is at sea.

Sipadan Water Village Resort is a beautiful building with Bajau architectural design.Part of the Mabul Island is also home to the Bajau fishermen who build their boxes traditionally braided palm leaves. The Bajau Laut, the only nomadic tribe of sea gypsies who spend their lives in water. Over the years, some have opted for a more sedentary life in villages in an ancient anchorage as Mabul. The resort is built entirely on stilts Beliar, known for its extreme hardness and durability, arranged to minimize the impact on the existing reef. Its design has achieved a splendid ideal distribution flowered walks a careful blend Asian and continental cuisine and attentive service. The dive center staff specializes in the intricate coral reefs and are willing to share their experience.

" Mabul, Sipadan quite different, their Augas anything deep and with a gentle slope bordering the reefs surrounding the island. Located near the coast of Borneo and on the continental shelf, the waters are rich in nutrients, and therefore full of life, exotic creatures and major dive sites, macro paradise and diverse ecosystems. The Mabul Resort Located on a quiet white sand beach that invites you to relax, designed by and for the diver, many dive sites are near the resort, so it is common to the dive back, enjoy a lovely tropical breeze in your own chair.

Mabul is arguably one of the riches single destinations for exotic small marine life anywhere in the world. Flamboyant cuttlefish, blue-ringed octopus, mimic octopus and bobtail squids are just some of the numerous types of cephalopods to be found on Mabul's reef. The sight of harlequin shrimp feeding on sea stars and boxer crabs waving their tiny anemone pompoms are just a small example of the endless species of crustaceans. Many types of gobies can be found including goby dot-fin, black goby of the sail-fin goby and metallic shrimp. The Frogfish is everywhere - the giant frogfish, clown painted and looks almost regularly with the entire family of scorpion fish. It would be quicker to list the species not found at Mabul - crazy critters are in abundance at this magical macro site! Local business philosophy is very dangerous to the eco system of the area. Garbage on the island routinely discharged on the north side of the island was he becomes someone else passes the problem down. The population of the island of tourists and temporary Bajau (sea gypsy) has a detrimental effect to the water table of the islands.
Gypsy village on Mabul Island near the island of Sipadan. Sidapan Island was declared a natural park and its beaches are the place for laying eggs of green turtles. Sidapan dives are known for its vertical and its abundant pelagic fauna. Sidapan Island is located in the northeast of Borneo in the Celebes Sea. Is an oceanic island, emerging from 600 m. deep. In some of the dive sites of Sipadan reef gradually drops to 20 m. starting depth to the cliff. In these walls full of caves and sea fans are found throughout the pelagic fauna: schools of barracuda, blankets, white tip sharks, gray, hammerhead sharks, schools of buffalo parrotfish, green turtles, hawksbill turtles, etc.. But not only the pelagic fauna attracts divers from all in one dive mundo.es can identify different species of nudibranchs, leaf fish, prawns, fish hawk, several species of clownfish brown tape, etc. The cruise aboard the Celebes Explorer is the first to combine diving in the islands of Mabul, Kapalai and Siamil with dives on the island of Sipadan. It is also the only cruise that offers diving and coral islands that were previously closed to the diver, such as Siamil (with incredible gardens of soft corals). The diving board is unlimited.

Boats resting beside the sand on the island of Pulau Mabul, paradise for divers and inhabited by gypsies of the sea. Mabul is especially known for its proximity to the island of Sipadan (Malaysia). Schools of thousands of barracuda followed by banks or batfish Carangidae, dozens of buffalo fish, reef sharks and an endless parade of turtles is what stands in Sipadan, while Kapalai Mabul and toad fish or ghost pipe alternate with hundreds of horse mackerel, juvenile platax, mandarins, or fry nudibranchs chest unimaginable, unreal-looking. A dive of endless possibilities. Current legislation Sabah National Park provides a maximum quota of 120 divers a day on the island of Sipadan. This quota is distributed among the different dive operators in the area, and to access the need to apply for a permit to National Parks. For this reason the Sipadan diving is not always guaranteed and is subject to its grant, which is nominative, for each diver. For more information, please contact our reservations department.
A boy plays in the sea near the fishing town of Roma on the island of Pulau Mabul.Barracuda Point. Diving is the most representative of Sipadan. Formed by a large coral platform that extends out as to suddenly transform into a wall that descends to almost oceanic 1,000 meters. Especially first thing in the morning and live better, you can see a real parade of animals. For the early birds is almost sure to find a school of parrot fish compact buffalo, are also frequent groups batfish and schools of bigeye trevally, but undoubtedly the most eagerly awaited are the barracudas, that they form a school ofover a thousand copies, which clog up the sunshine. Between them, gray sharks, silver tips, white tips, one leopard and one could not forget, turtles and more turtles. The hundreds of reef fish, sea fans and sponges really overshadowed by the above.

Boats used by the inhabitants of the island of Mabul for fishing. This island attract thousands of divers each year to be considered one of the most privileged of the world for its diversity of seafloor. Coral Garden. Reef and sometimes steep wall, which reaches almost the surface, something that makes us very comfortable to enjoy this dive in the safety stop. Standing next to the company of green and hawksbill turtles, we consider a very good representation of the reef fish that inhabit these funds. The parrots nibble the coral, while pairs of butterfly scrutinize every corner in search of food, as well as a wide variety of angelfish. Gorgonians and sponges that line the wall are u varied and colorful, and before them - if we listen - we can watch the proceedings from tuna and sharks burly gray that lurk in the blue, while the white tips resting in the clear sand.
The inhabitants of the island of Mabul, sea gypsies, share their territory with some hotels for divers. Possibly one of the brightest dive sites and useful for environmental photography. The vertical wall is topped by a platform reef teeming with life, with dozens of cleaning stations in that cluster sweet lips, groupers and batfish, hoping that small wrasses do their job. Corals are the best on the island and the bottom of the wall between 30 and 40 meters, provides the opportunity to see incredible sizes gorgonians, like huge elephant ears, barrel sponges and alcyonarians of hair colors considerable size.
Some house boats used by fishermen from the island of Mabul Pualu. Lobster Lair. Wall diving dominated by large gorgonians and ongoing parade of sea batfish followed. It is a place where we should not lose sight of the blue, since next to South Point is one of the best places to see hammerhead sharks, Sphyrna lewini type, which can form groups of more than 50 individuals. If the water temperature is high, as often happens in Sipadan, we go to deep levels. If you have suitable qualification technical diving, deep dives are organized between 60 and 70 meters. Mid Reef. The profile of this dip is very similar to other parts of the island, alternating slope and wall, but not diving it is repetitive. Acroporas occupy the top and exposed the reef, where the most abundant fish are small and medium size, such as groupers, chipmunks, angel, butterflies, surgeons, fusiliers, damselfish and rabbit fish, the latter being something worthy of note, since the variety and quantity of these animals is very big, something really hard to see in other places. In the sandy areas is common to see white tip sharks, forming small groups, or turtles, which tolerate the presence of divers to unimaginable limits. As we gain depth decreases vertebrate life and soft corals and increase the possibility of encounters with gray or silver tip sharks.

Some local children swim in the beachfront of Pulau Mabul, next to a resort which hosted some of the Subrina each year flock to this place. South Point. A good site for lovers of the depth and hammers, but also ideal for those who prefer more relaxed dimensions. The first part of the dive is usually done in the lower part of the wall, where highlights barrel sponges and elephant ears, but soon attracted depth is lost in endless parade of fish that circulate in the top: sharks whitetip, leopard sharks, turtles, platax and often large schools of Carangidae (mainly large-eyed mackerel) provide more than interesting and including pompano mixed Australian and small sharks. A dip of which is often asked to repeat. Turtle Patch. A very similar profile to South Point, with a broad platform on top, which also often find schools of jacks. Gorgoinias and all kinds of soft corals line the wall and reef fish diversity is very large, but possibly the most surprising is the number of turtles, and it is difficult to surprise this in Sipadan, since they are permanent companions immersion At Turtle Patch are magnified, are everywhere, resting on large black coral, hidden in any wall cavity, swimming - alone or in groups - in the blue and forming large groups in sandy areas, where are treated for parasites by the cleaner wrasse. A unique opportunity to see the behavior in pigs. Four divers were preparing for a dive near the island of Pulau Mabul, in Turtle Tomb. A place of legend and fame. This cave offers a grand entrance to 21 feet deep, encloses dozens of skeletons of turtles, which for years was thought came to this place to die, similar to the legend of the elephant burial grounds. Even now, scientists have broken the spell of the legend, showing that they are just turtles that were lost inside the cave and suffocated to death. The immersion is done in small groups of 3 divers, with equipment and specialized guide magnum without need for specific qualifications. The first stage takes place in the entrance hall, a cave of large proportions, at the bottom (70 meters from the entrance and 14 m deep) opens a narrow tunnel that leads to the second room, a hugecavity with a central boulder, where we will see more than 60 skeletons of a tortoise, scattered throughout the room. Visibility is excellent, but divers must show exquisite control of buoyancy, as the fund is a fine silt that if they can muddy up everything. Back, and near the exit is also possible to see the skeleton of a Marlyn and practically was a huge barracuda that exceeds five feet, but this time of "flesh and blood."

Marlyn and practically was a huge barracuda that exceeds five feet, but this time of "flesh and blood."

Several divers begin a dip in the vicinity of the island of Mabul, the House Reef. This dive site is directly across from the resort Mabul Water Bungalows, and is accessible from your own pier or boat, if it is housed in another facility. At first glance it seems a point of no great interest, with a sandy bottom and a regular visibility, but within seconds of being immersed we realize that this immersion is the best in Mabul, but at the same time the most peculiar we can perform. Already under the pier will see many juvenile batfish, scrawled file fish, lionfish, crocodile fish and boxfish. As we gain depth, silhouetted strange to us, are huge wooden structures, similar to scaffolding, 10 meters high. Above them there is such a concentration of life that will surprise the more experienced diver, it is easy to get lost among the thousands of Carangidae, barely let us see what is behind them, the beams of the structures are located large toadfish, and with these groupers, sweet lips and crossbows. At night the large sandy areas interspersed with coral offer unique opportunities for macro photography.
Divers on one of the dive sites near the resorts at Lobster Wall. Small coral wall, perfect for afternoon and night dives. Alcyonarians hundreds of blue hanging on the wall give it a distinctive look. It's a dive to look for small animals, such as the clown frogfish, various types of crustaceans, tens of nudibranchs and the ever elusive Ocellated lionfish. West Ridge. Furrowed with deep vertical wall starters, as if a giant hand had scraped a reef.On the outside wall abundant soft corals and sea fans, while the incoming pile bat fish, sweet lips groups, mere solitary, small groups of surgeons and angelfish many different varieties. Attention to the sandy bottom of these starters, because they are usually chosen by leopard sharks to rest. Intermittently also find small holes in the wall, like a terrace, where almost certainly find turtles resting. White Tip Avenue. As its name suggests is a good place to meet white-tipped reef sharks, the most common species of this island. They are usually seen in the shallows, and the day are usually resting on the sandy bottom, but first thing in the morning or late afternoon (in Sipadan diving is not allowed after 6 pm ) are much more active, swimming in small groups and preparing for the hunt. But not only see white tips, this place is also perfect for the leopard shark or simply for contemplation of thousands of reef fish, colors and shapes of diverse cultures.
Fishing boats along the pier on Pulau Mabul. Its inhabitants, mostly Filipino immigrants, are engaged in fishing. Diving in Paradise. A dive reef and muck diving, which develops in a small hillside. On the day we watch schools of juvenile barracuda and schools of fusiliers, but also discover striking nudibranchs, ghost pipefish and scorpion fish. At night, the picture changes, and one of the attractions - just at dusk - is the encounter with the Mandarins. Sponge crabs, snakes, turtles, crocodile fish and small crustaceans along the complete sample of what we see. Ray Point Diving. This area is an extension of Lobster Wall, but the wall is transformed into a very steep slope. Not as abundant as in Sipadan, the turtles also tend to hang around this area, but the focus is on smaller life.It is a good place to try to locate stonefish, which blend seamlessly into the interior cracks and crevices. We may also see many nudibranchs, crabs curious, different types of clownfish and a long list of small reef fish.

A fisherman in the town of Semporna, the operational base for divers and divers who are diving in Sabah. You can dive in Mabul at Sea Ventures. The name of this dive it is given by the resort mounted on an old oil platform, a unique tourist option very well accepted by the Japan market. The water is very clear and the little light that comes under the platform gives the room a little dark, but it is a compulsory dipping for muck diving enthusiasts, both day and night. You can see huge schools of fusiliers or brunettes huge, but more attractive is much smaller. Toadfish are common, both yellow and red, orange or black, as are abundant juveniles of different species, among which the slender platax, sweet lips and the restless juvenile boxfish, which despite its small size, its yellow livery with black dots, lets not go unnoticed. Crocodile fish are dozens, gobies with their companions crabs, pipe fish of different kinds, eels, snakes and so on that leaves a unique souvenir.
Mabul Island offers accommodation to the beach for divers. Close it finds the island of Kapalai dive with several points as the Magic Rock. Small low enough away from the island, if you can call and Kapalai, which really is a small patch of sand in the sea. The low shows two heads, about which the dive, which at times is affected by the current.Table Acroporas extend down the slopes and under these we can surprise big cuttlefish, they expect the night to come out of hiding, they are also abundant leaf scorpion fish, ribbon eels, nudibranchs and flatworms. Mandarin. Just before the resort pier. A small slope gives access to an extensive sandy plain on which find joint isolated reefs and some small remnants of the wreck. Is an immersion of 75% divig muck, but very good, with great diversity of species and many juveniles, such as angelfish. Ghost pipefish, crocodile fish, scorpion fish types, lionfish, etc. But we can also see larger animals such as turtles, Carangidae and sweet lips. Mid Reef. Flat bottom dotted with small mounds covered with small corals, visibility not so good. Moraines of different kinds, various nudibranch frog fish are some of the most common species, not to mention all the typical reef fauna can also be found, such as surgeon fish, angel fish, groupers, stingrays, clown fish and a variety of wrasses noteworthy.
A fishing boat leaving the port of Semporna. In the distance you can see the mosque in Semporna. The only interesting building in Semporna is the mosque, pure white, contrasting with its surroundings, particularly with the market, medium built over the water. The Diving from Semporna options are varied, from the backpacker budget is spent diving and sleep diary for 2 euros, to luxury resorts, some with private island, passing through the strangest place I've dived the SeaVentures mentioned Dive oil platform, which now, instead of extracting oil from the seabed, sent divers to it. Junkie Scuba-diving is the most popular center of Semporna, with attached guest house, you only costs 2 € if you dive with them and 4 € if you stay only. The owner, Tino is a German lover of underwater photography, as evidenced by dozens of high quality pictures hanging on the diving center, and the manager, Ric, a Scot who went on vacation 2 weeks ago and stayed 5 years For 50 € you can do 3 dives per day, meals included, leaving at 8 am and returning on the 4. The speedboats take 40 minutes to get from Semporna to Mabul, the Sipadan island nearest to accommodation but too aborrotada for my taste, and in 20 minutes you are in Sipadan. The first dive leaves you so stunned that you almost forget to breathe, since only 2 / 3 meters in depth the variety of corals and tropical fish is unique. Although this is not the best time of year, the monsoon still be lurking, visibility is good, between 15 and 20 meters.

Although this is not the best time of year, the monsoon still be lurking, visibility is good, between 15 and 20 meters.

The fishing boats leave and enter the port of Semporna continuously, as do those of transporting divers to Pulau Mabul and Pulau Sipadam. In the diving area Sipadam, suddenly, the sand ends, and a vertical wall collapses in the almost infinite depths, far beyond what our eye can reach, home to thousands of species of plants and animals interact perfect harmony like a symphony musicians. You have to decide what to dedicate because fish are less than one centimeter, and about a shark is going to 3 meters or a giant turtle, and if you're jumping from small to large and vice versa agobiándote and you can just get dizzy Better concentrate on a big dip, and the next in the small, or vice versa. The break between the first and second dive at Sipadan is done, but on the beach and pier, and all accommodations are closed, with no trespassing signs, and the army is patrolling and housecleaning. There is a little strange to see the colorful costumes of the divers in contrast to those of military camouflage and heavily armed and unfriendly faces, not if they are annoyed by having to protect some foreigners who are going to dive in paradise. A fisherman on a boat in the port of Semporna. Borneo. A khaki patrol boats also at odds among all white. fter the second dive, which has already lost count of the species you've seen, the boat goes to Mabul, where does the third. This immersion is almost always worse than Sipadan because the pressure on the ecosystem of all people housed is very strong and the visibility is always smaller. I recommend it for diving fans who are able to do 5 or 6 dives a day, because the platform has all the advantages of being on a dive boat but none of its drawbacks, even when the wind is strong, it wobbles a bit, but never like a boat. With 5 floors that can accommodate nearly 100 people, just dive suit and put you down in an elevator. Some even intrepid divers throw from the platform into the sea. At the very heart of the platform, placed on 6 huge piles resting on the bottom at 15 meters depth, is enormous variety of wildlife, including fish that did not know, and it seems "impossible", frogfish,Walking with hands instead of fins and looks weird. The platform is near Mabul and other dives are made between Mabul, Sipadan and Kapalai. Kapalai is an island invisible 2 times a day because it is actually a sandbar that disappears at high tide, and she just overlook the huts built on stilts.
Views from the Hotel Dragon Inn in Semporna. It occupies most of the SOCT, and hosts several log cabins, apparently simple, but they are very well built and their VIP rooms, bungalow-style round, are a delight. Jacques Cousteau Sipadan placed among the top 10 dive spots in the world. This triggered the popularity of Sipadan, a small island that could not absorb the plethora of divers who had come to verify what he said Cousteau. One of its main attractions is just 10 meters from the beach, the reef falls with a vertical drop of 700 meters that afflicts any diver, by an expert that is, overlooking its immensity. The Malaysian government decided in 2005 that could only dive at Sipadan, but closed all accommodations on the island, where they now reside solely military. The main reason is its proximity to the Philippines, where it departed on April 23, 2000 a group of heavily armed rebels who abducted 21 people who were quietly housed in Sipadan.Abu Sayaff, faced with the Philippine authorities and seeking international fame and money, remained tense months for 5 abducted tourists and workers from Sipadan, hidden among thousands of islands that are in the area. A fisherman out to sea in a tiny boat from the port of Semporna. In August 2000 Abu Sayaff claimed a ransom of 21 million dollars, one for each hostage, no one paid officially, but rumors that I heard in Semporna point to Gadaffi, who apparently wanted to curry favor with the U.S. and Europe to be taken off the black list of international terrorists. The main port of departure for diving Sipadan, Mabul and Kapalai is Semporna, perhaps the dirtiest city in Malaysia. Half the city is built directly on the sea, with houses on stilts, stilt style, and all waste goes directly into the sea. Unfortunately the currents often lead to Sipadan.

and all waste goes directly into the sea. Unfortunately the currents often lead to Sipadan.

From Dragon Inn Hotel can see the ships entering and leaving the port of Semporna.Mataking diving in Sipadan is different, because here you are not surrounded by 100 divers, and the amount of wildlife is less in quantity, not quality, as I found new nudibranchs, frogfish, crocodile fish, seahorses Tues dwarfs, mandarin fish and eels, which, ironically, here are blue. The dive sites are varied, with more than 30 locations around the island and adjacent islands, and only an hour by speedboat is Sipadan.Mataking are actually 2 islands, connected by a spit of white sand at low tide, which can be seen very well from a wooden tower about 15 meters have been built, from which you can see the whole island and take pictures that give an idea of how close is paradise here.
At sunset sea views from the Hotel Dragon Inn are almost unbeatable. Mataking can accommodate about 70 people in homes "real", as royalty, as it is called King, with a Jacuzzi tub overlooking the sea, or the most "modest" bungalow with names of fish. The resort is built with eco-tourism and sustainability criteria. Dead corals are used to set the plants and the rain does not take the land. On the eastern side of the island is stranded on Mataking 1, the first ship that used to supply when the island was opened to tourism in 2002.
Sunset in Semporna. Hotel Dragon Inn. Gateway to dive towards the nearby islands of Pulau Sipadan and Pulau Mabul. Semporna about 100 km from Tawau port is the population base for divers who are going to Sipadan and to reach there you can catch the local bus for about 25-50 MYR depends on what you bargain or make a reservation before any dive center you come to pick up the airport with its magnificent vans.Accommodation at Uncle Chang is the most cumbersome in the area, and you can easily run into cockroaches, salamanders and other species that nest in the rooms.Besides Uncle Chang spends his days drunk and not properly treated as tourists. The sun is hiding in Semporna. Image taken from the Hotel Dragon Inn. A former oil rig has been converted into a hotel for divers is a success. It is located in the Celebes Sea in the western Pacific, in an area that is bounded by the island of Borneo, Indonesia and the Philippines. Is that marine life is so rich in this area is a success that continues to grow among diving enthusiasts. Coral reefs, shoals of tropical fish, sea turtles, barracudas and sharks (a species that does not attack humans.) Everything is so rich and varied under those waters that many interested in staying on this platform. Nearby is the island of Sipadan, and known by divers from around the world. As last year is a national park, only 120 permits are issued daily diving to reach the island, which is shared between the resorts as Seaventures.

Two local women walk along the pier of Semporna. SLA Sipadan: Sipadan Island is the only oceanic island in the Malay Archipelago. Has a unique landscape as it does not share the usual way from the beaches of the archipelago, but is, as the figure suggests, a fungus protruding from the water. The island can accommodate only 160 people, but since early this year is absolutely forbidden to stay in it. It is only allowed at the moment, diving. However, in 15 or 20 minutes, you can get from the islands of Mabul and Kapalai are famous for their huts and bungalows. Sipadan Island was declared a natural park because of the richness of its collection since its beaches are the place for laying eggs of green turtles. Diving in Sipadan is known for its vertical walls. In some areas, dive the reef descends gradually to 20 m. starting depth to the cliff. In these walls full of caves and sea fans are all kinds of pelagic fauna: schools of barracuda, blankets, white tip sharks, gray, hammerhead sharks, schools of parrot fish, buffalo, mandarin, green turtles, hawksbill turtles, etc. But not only the pelagic fauna attracts divers from around the world. In a single dive can identify different species of nudibranchs, leaf fish, prawns, fish hawk, several species of clownfish, moray tape, etc.

A Malay family in one of the gateways to the Hotel Dragon Inn. Semporna. Eastern Sabah. This is the ideal place for those who want to dive in Sipadan, as this resort is located on the island of Sipadan in front of the famous "Drop Of". This diving area internationally famous for its sea and its fauna and pelagic (barracudas , sharks, hammerhead, millions of technicolor fish, turtles, etc ... Oncle Chang leads peopleSipadam illegally and is drunk all day. A girl walking on the catwalks of Hotel Dragon Inn in Semporna, a place full of diving agencies, such as sQuba Junkie. Oncle Chang is illegal and is not recommended. Sipadan is well known: walls huge schools of barracudas and jacks, turtles and white tip sharks and occasional dull moment blankets and hammers. It's expensive (about 150 euros a day with 3 dives) but it's worth. Some operators (Chang, among others) are not recommended for equipment in poor condition and the passivity of their divemasters. Scuba Junkie and Borneo Divers are the best, but often have reservations Sipadan busy for months. Mabul, the island next door, is a great alternative or supplement. The diving is much cheaper (50 euros for two dives, including equipment) and for many, even better than Sipadan, in the sense that there are things that only can be viewed, but not so large. Life is absolutely macroimpressive but also look a lot turtles, large groupers and schools of barracudas, fusiliers and jacks. It's worth a lot but we need to go with a good divemaster to show you the animals, which is perfectly camouflaged. Even the snorkelling, much cheaper ( less than three euros) is great and turtles, among others, are practically guaranteed. You can stay overnight on the island or in the town of Semporna, on the coast, an hour of sailing, and about 8 hours by bus (Gelido by air conditioning) of Kota Kinabalu. In this resort there are three types of accommodations: Lodge wood on the island, in a bungalow overlooking the sea and on stilts in the water. These last are the best and most expensive, but worth it because it is a luxury and will also take away all the mosquitoes in the water. You also have the Sipadan Water Bungalow and Borneo Divers, all these on the island of Mabul. On the island of Kapalai, which is not an island but rather a sand spit at low tide it is exposed and the resort is all palafitos in water, is the Kapalai Resort. Also opposite the island of Mabul is a former oil rig has now been converted into a hotel for divers.

One of the many restaurants in Semporna where we can test the delicioasa Malaysian food. In early 1890s, the population was about 200 Tawau comprising mainly immigrants and Tawi-Tawi Bulungan who had fled from Dutch rule in Kalimantan, Borneo. This little village remained trade with the Dutch. In the February 9, 1893, the recipient S. "Normanhurst" sailed in Tawau (or Tawa as it was then known) for the first time with a full charge Dammar, of gutta-percha, India rubber, shell, and ivory to barter for the Broken, raisins, nests of birds and rubber. It was in 1898 that a settlement was established and Chinese immigrants began settling in Tawau. At that time, conditions in China were chaotic. The mass unemployment and hunger were pervasive as a result of the Opium War. The Chinese especially in the southern part of China immigrated to British and Dutch colonies in Southeast Asia particularly oriental.Los measures were taken to establish the rudiments of local government by the company of British North Borneo (loaded). (The annual volume of North Borneo 1966-1965 recorded that Tawau was founded in 1898). The leases of land were alienated by the administration. Since Tawau is situated near the border with Indonesia, it is worth mentioning here that the limit is Sebatik 4 ° 10'N latitude that was defined in 1912 by a Boundary Commission comprising officials from the United Kingdom and Netherlands A joint report was prepared along with a map and duly signed by their respective commissions in Tawau on 17/2/1913. By a protocol between the UK and the Netherlands signed in London on 28/9/1915, the two governments confirmed the common report and mapa.En the 30's, quickly prospered Tawau due largely to its agricultural potential. The resident population rose from 1931 to 1800. Kuhara rubber and the states of Manila hemp and coconut Kubota states were the two largest plantation time. Mundal War (1914-1918) does not directly affect Tawau, which had, however, suffered its share of world depression.Sandakan was the permanent seat of government and the trade center, Tawau was a small but thriving city. By the end of the 30's, there were about 60 shophouses, all wood-have built, lining the two main streets of Tawau, Dunlop Street (named after A. Orangutans at the Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre in Sepilok. Eastern Sabah. If visiting the rehabilitation center for orangutans of Sepilok is more likely to see these animals if you just take a tour of the Kinabalu National Park. This reserve was created in 1964 and she was caring for primates and reintroduce them into the jungle. Be careful with these animals that may be too curious ... There are several hiking trails in the reserve, from the most accessible to the most complicated. The most difficult will take you through the mangroves, on a walk of two to three hours. Apart from birds and you will see the famous monkeys orangutans of Borneo gibbons. Guided tours to see these animals. These visits can be arranged in the reception area and prices are included in the price of admission to the reserve. There are plenty of things to do in Sepilok after dark. You can book an evening stroll by the Centre for Orangutan, to see these animals at night. You can also get close to the bars in the area such as Batu Empat or the Four Mile. Both bars are perfect for a drink and stay overnight at Sepilok. A few meters from the sanctuary of orangutans have the Rainforest Discovery Centre. It is an excellent opportunity to walk through the canopy of giant trees, which can reach about 28 meters. There is an amazing suspension bridge that connects many of the trees, with different towers from which have fantastic views.

Borneo jungle is more liable each day, and what was once a primary forest is making strides towards palm plantations for palm oil processing, used in the first world as boicombustible. There are many environmental impacts produced by this culture, beyond the obvious deforestation that has resulted from the clearing of lowland rain forest to establish plantations (86% of deforestation in Malaysia between 1995-2000 was produced by the crop). Several studies have found a significant reduction in biological diversity (about 80% in plants and 80-90% in mammals, birds and reptiles) after conversion of forest to oil palm plantations. In addition, many animals are not able to move through the fields, while others, such as orangutans, become pests for crops, which puts them at risk of being poached by the plantation managers. The use of herbicides and pesticides also can affect species composition and pollute local streams. Drainage systems required by crops (palm oil Borneo down quite often in swamp forests) may lower the water level, affecting the surrounding wooded areas.Even the destruction of peat bogs increases the risk of floods and fires. Burning to clear land, caused by large palm plantations owners, were the main cause of large fires that occurred during 1997-1998 on the island. Given the scarcity of wood in parts of Borneo, a large segment of its population currently has few economic options. Oil palm appears to be the best alternative for communities that can barely survive on rubber plantations, rice crops and orchards subsistence. When a large agricultural firm enters an area, some community members are eager to be part of an oil palm plantation. Lacking legal title to their land, the people of the communities agree to the purchase of 2-3 hectares (5-8 acres) of land for crops of this palm. Usually they ask the company purchased $ 3.000 to 6.000 dollars (with interest rates of 30% per annum) to buy seeds, fertilizers and other inputs. As oil palm takes about 7 years to bear fruit, these people work during that time in mature plantations receive a salary of $ 2.50 a day. Meanwhile, their property does not generate revenue but require inputs that the company sells. Once the crop becomes productive, generates an average income of $ 682-900 per month for every 2 acres. In the past, wood and rubber generate between $ 350 and $ 1000 per month, according to Curran. The low profit margins combined with high initial costs and relatively high interest payments virtually ensures that small holders will be permanently indebted to the company that owns the business. Curran studies suggest that communities of West Kalimantan are deeply concerned about the flooding that may occur after the establishment of oil palm plantations. They also worry about the loss of forest resources and cultural. The elders of the communities do not always like the idea of women and children working on plantations. The palm plantations also lead to increased dependence on farming enterprises because people can no longer produce their own food. Finally, some communities have expressed their dissatisfaction with working for the Malays. They prefer to work independently, says Curran. Although they have a number of complaints, few people see alternatives.

Proboscis monkeys jumping from tree to tree on the slopes of the Kinabatangan River.Proboscis monkeys can only be seen in the wild in Borneo. For most people, the most striking thing is not your nose (it is), but because of the strange fur and long tail, these monkeys convey a very strange feeling, between bear and clown, between animal and person. His movements, as in many other monkeys, they are very "human", but also his immense belly, his big nose and color display, make it impossible not to think of a certain type of tourist. The people of Borneo should have a similar idea, and did not hesitate to rename the proboscis monkeys when the first Europeans looked out for their island. The official name for these monkeys is "bekantan" but many locals call them "orang Beland," or "inhabitant of Holland." The Dutch life, come on ... Let's think and assume that they called "Dutch" to the monkeys because they were Europeans who had to hand (although it had been there before the English) and not because they were that were closest to the proboscis monkeys. In any case, see a Proboscis Monkey in Bako is an experience well worth a trip. And if the vision of the proboscis monkey will join the fantastic trips, incredible scenery, the atmosphere we breathe in the cabins of the national park and other animals that inhabit the park, Bako is rapidly becoming one of those places where one wishes to stay for much longer than a trip "normal" is usually allowed. So it is not uncommon to find among the people visiting the park that has traveled 3 months, 9 months, 1 year, 5 years ...
Some monkeys proboscis on the tops of the trees in the Kinabatangan River. This brings us to the next point: the way from Kuching and Bako National Park. Again, the possibility arises to take it easy and save money (taking the bus number 6) or pay more to get before (by climbing one of the vans in the square where the bus leaves). Whether by bus or van, the goal is to reach the village of Bako (Kampung Bako). Once there, you must go to the dock (no loss) and buy tickets the boat that takes you to the park. One thing that no Malaysian will give you and it is important to note: often fails to reach the boat to the dock of the national park because the tide is too low. That means two things: you have to walk with their legs stuck in the water and have to carry your backpack / suitcase / bag on top. The council is therefore carry the backpack very well done (and no loose items) and be prepared to put my feet in the water (shoes that can get wet and not go on: in flip-flops). As many travelers will tell you, the landing is one of the wonderful experiences that have Bako. In the Malaysian state of Sabah, northern Borneo, is one of the oldest jungles and best preserved of the planet, despite the appalling deforestation caused by logging. Currently, he is considered one of the best place to observe wildlife in Southeast Asia, especially of some primates like the proboscis monkey (Nasalis larvatus), the Mueller's gibbons or Borneo (Hylobates muelleri) or red langur (Presbytisrubicunda), you can also see Sumatran rhinos, Asian elephants and orangutans One of the best ways to get around the site is to follow the course of the Kinabatangan River, which is the second longest river in Malaysia, with a length of 560 km from its source in the mountains of southwest Sabah to its mouth in the Sulu Sea, east of Sandakan. In addition to observing its stunning wildlife, include impressive limestone caves Gomantong, and its great variety of forests and mangroves.

A vendor outside the Sandakan market. Eastern Sabah. During the early 1870s, the east coast of Sabah was under control of the Sultan of Sulu, who also ruled what is now the southern Philippines. The first European settlement in the area was founded by William Clarke Cowie, a Scottish Glasgow gun smuggler, who was the Sultan's permission to establish a small trading base. Cowie called his establishment Sandakan, which Tausug (Sulu) means "the place that was pawned, but he soon came to be known as" Kampung German "after the large number of Germans who also installed the poles there. The settlement was part of the Austro-Hungarian consul lease Baron von Overbeck acquired from the Sultan of Sulu in 1878. After the lease was purchased by Dent's British partner Alfred von Overbeck, Kampong German was accidentally razed to the ground on 15 June 1879. The new British Resident, William B.Pryer, decided not to rebuild the village but to move to Buli Sim Sim on June 21, 1879.He named his new establishment Elopura, meaning beautiful city. Some years later, the name was changed back to Sandakan. The name Elopura still refer to a region of Sandakan.En 1883, the capital of British North Borneo Company was moved from Kudat to Sandakan. In the mid-thirties, the export of timber from Sandakan reached the record figure of 180,000 cubic meters, making it the port's largest timber-exporting tropical wood in the world. At the height of the timber boom, Sandakan had boasted the highest concentration of millionaires anywhere in the Sandakan tierra.La Japanese occupation during World War II began on January 19, 1942 and lasted until a brigade of the Australian 9th Division released him on October 19, 1945. The Japanese administration restored the Elopura known for the city. One of the many atrocities of the Second World War was the death marches of Sandakan, when Japanese soldiers chose to move about 6,000 POWs in Sandakan 260 kilometers (160 miles) inland to the town of Ranau. Packed with prisoners who did not die on the way to Ranau in unsanitary shacks, with most of those survivors either died of dysentery or were killed by prison guards. When the war ended, Sandakan was completely destroyed in Allied bombing of and partly by the Japanese. Consequently, when North Borneo became British Crown Colony in 1946, the capital was shifted to Jesselton, now known as Kota Kinabalu (often just called "KK" locally). Sandakan port remains second in Sabah after Kota Kinabalu. The port is important for palm oil, snuff, cocoa, coffee, manila hemp and sago exports. Sandakan is also one of bustling cities in East Malaysia. Once the dominant industry of the wood is relatively small now. Tourism is likely to become increasingly important for the future of the city. In recent years, businesses have shifted their operations away from the city center to the suburbs due to the presence of illegal immigrants in the city center. In January 2003, the square of the port of Sandakan, urban renewal project, was launched in an attempt to restore the town center and commercial hub in Sandakan. Provide a new central market and fish market, a shopping mall, and hotels. Should be constructed in three separate phases and is due for completion in 2010. Sandakan residents have had serious problems with electricity and water supply for several decades. These problems have never been solved despite repeated promises during elections. The power fails often if there is a thunderstorm or heavy rain. However, since mid-2007, the blackout has become much less common to follow the completion of the electricity grid in the West-East.

Houses located on the side of a mountain in the Kinabalu National Park. Kinabalu National Park is located in Sabah, a region in the northeast of the island of Borneo (Malaysia). It occupies an area of 754 km2 and an altitude of 4090 meters is the highest mountain in Borneo, and one of the richest biological areas on the planet (there have been about 700 different species of orchids). Much of the flora of this mountain is Kinabalu endemic and not found anywhere else in the world. The panoramic mountain wakes up, mid-morning is covered with clouds, in the early evening sky darkens and afternoon rains begin. Receives an annual rainfall of 400 cm at the base of the park (at 1560 m altitude) and temperatures around 20 degrees, while at the top the average temperature drops to 2-10 ° and the rainfall is 450 cm per year (we could suffer well).Knowing that here find cloud forest epiphytes and many decided to make the ascent of the mountain (August). The first part to the refuge of Laban Rata (3262 m) performed in a 5.30 am (stopping to take pictures and look at the flora). In this area are almost all orchids. Be prepared to climb in heavy rain. Of the estimated 263 species of Dendrochilum, 81 are from Borneo. Mount Kinabalu is the richest site Dendrochilum around Borneo where 32 species have been described, which represent 39.5% of all of Borneo. Twelve species and two varieties of these are endemic to this mountain. The monsoons in Malaysia beginning in October and end in February, in some places early March. The east coast of Malaysia suffers a lot, especially areas such as islands Perhentians (closed hotels, no ferries, the locals are on the islands, etc).
Ships laden with timber travel the waters of Sungai Kinabatangan. Sukau. This statement attests to the magnitude of the logging carried out in Borneo for the past 20 years. The island has experienced pressure of the most intensive logging in tropical forests registered, extracting sometimes more than 240 cubic meters of wood per hectare (the average in the Amazon is 23 cubic meters / ha). This intensity eventually became the bane of the industry: the timber market collapsed in Malaysia and Indonesia in the last 15 years. Today forestry remains important on the island, especially in the regions of Kalimantan and Sarawak, where many people continue to work in the logging companies, which generated hundreds of millions dollars for the local economy. Below is a brief overview of logging in Borneo. The first dawned logging in Borneo, Malaysia and then in Kalimantan, Indonesia. Both countries had similar cycles of expansion and collapse brought about by government subsidies, and ease in lending for construction of roads and sawmills. Illegal logging was widespread in both countries. early 90s at least one third of Malaysia's timber exports were illegally obtained, including 40% of the timber shipped to Japan. Illegal logging remains a problem in Malaysia, although not as severe as in Indonesia. Currently, Malaysia is involved in the illegal timber trade largely through smuggling and illegal operations in other countries, particularly Indonesia.Malaysian companies are complicit in illegal logging in Kalimantan. Sometimes timber smuggled across the border and then shipped as timber was "Malay." Pier at Sungai Kinabatangan River. Homestay Walai Miso experiential tourism. Sukau. Eastern Sabah.Kinabatangan River (Sungai Kinabatangan) is located in Sabah, east Malaysia, on the island of Borneo. It is the second longest river in Malaysia, with a length of 560 kilometers from its headwaters in the mountains of southwest Sabah, to its outlet at the Sulu Sea, east of Sandakan.Kinabatangan is known for its remarkable wildlife and fascinating habitats such limestone caves in Gomantong Hill, dryland dipterocarp forests, riverine forest, forest freshwater marsh, oxbow lakes and salt marshes, mangrove costa.ecología near the upper reaches of the river has been stoppedseriously excessive logging and land clearing for plantations. However, the original forests of the lowland and mangrove swamps near the coast have survived in large part, and contain some of the highest concentrations of wildlife in Borneo. Of special note is Borneo's indigenous proboscis monkeys and orangutans, Asian elephants and Sumatran rhinoceros. The area also is known for its wide variety of birdlife.Cada year, the rains that hit the northeast monsoon made the river swell quickly. Unable to disgorge into the sea fast enough, the river frequently overflows its banks and spreads across the flat land of its lower reaches, creating a large floodplain. The lower Kinabatangan teeming with both the fauna and flora, making it the best area for wildlife viewing, not just in Sabah but all of Southeast Asia Oriental.En 1997, 270 square kilometers of the lower Kinabatangan floodplain were declared a protected area, and in 2001 this designation was upgraded to the "Bird Sanctuary" in large part to the efforts of World Wildlife Fund. However, other efforts to have the area declared a "wildlife refuge" or even "national park" has been opposed by the logging industry, and oil palm plantation owners seeking to extend their land cultivada.Actualmente, most nature tourism is concentrated around Sukau, accessible by road and offer comfortable accommodation for visitors prepared to pay well-managed travel. The populated area and the central government to city Kinabatangan Kinabatangan is located along the road to Sandakan-Lahad Datu, and about 90 kilometers from the town of Sandakan. The largest system of caves in Sabah Gomantong Caves can also be found in this región.En Sukau, many of the major tour operators maintain cottages. All lodges offer packages that usually include transportation, accommodation, food and guide services. The award winning country house a Sukau Rainforest lodges practicing responsable.Fomente tourism over the river in the village of Batu Putih you could choose to stay with local people from the Orang Sungei in Miso Walai homestay program. Near the village there are beautiful series of oxbow lakes. Provide accommodation, food, jungle guides, boat trips, fishing and other activities. They have also recently built eco-lodge in the jungle near one of the oxbow lakes - Lake Tungog. The ecotourism program has been successful and has clearly helped oxbow lake of the weed, financed afforestation projects and is providing a sustainable income for the community of Batu Putih.

Save orangutans

Borneo is the last hope for orangutans, an endangered species. The Spanish veterinary Rosa Garriga has spent the last five years of saving babies apes from certain death. She herself has her adventure. The country 28/nov/2004

It's eleven in the morning, and one of the workers orangutan rehabilitation center The Orangutan Care Center and Quarantine, located just outside Tanjung Puting National Park on the island of Borneo (Indonesia), enters the office to inform forest that police have just arrived with two new baby orangutan confiscated. In his truck carrying a wooden box. Through planks bewildered eyes see two young orangutans, one male and one female, hugging. They look younger than they are because they are very thin, but should not have more than two years.

The police tell us that these two orphans living with two families for a year in a village about 100 kilometers. They had been bought for 200,000 rupees (about 20 euros) a few loggers who had hunted after killing their mothers. The female is called Mawar, and the male, Yoris. Mawar has two cuts on the waist caused by the rope they had tied. The police say that in another village there are two captive orangutans and we will bring them. I worry about where we will place only during this month because the number of confiscated over 15 and quarantine cages are complete.

MORE INFORMATION
At least 1,000 orangutans die in fires affecting the island of Borneo
When I came to Borneo for four and a half years I was in the rehabilitation center at 140 individuals. In late July 2004, 225. Although Indonesian and international laws prohibiting hunting, possession and trafficking of these apes, orangutans arrive continuously center who have lost their mothers after being hunted and often eaten by hunters. The pups, which remain clinging to their mothers while they are dead, are captured and sold to the natives, who kept as pets or carried Java markets. Other pups end up in international networks of animal trafficking.

The three girls Dayaks in charge of quarantine laughingly discussed the appearance of newcomers. If it looks like that one, if you look what sweeter face? Carers give mangoes and bananas, and they eat them greedily, but when they get milk bottle reject it because they know what it is, much less how to drink from a teat. Milk is expensive in Indonesia, and the natives can not buy it, so those who are captive orangutans are fed the cheapest: bananas, boiled rice, sweet tea or water. After eating a little, the two babies inspect nearby cages and observed with curiosity the other orangutans and their new carers, who will become their adoptive mothers.

The Orangutan Care Center and Quarantine employs more than 120 natives, most of them Dayaks. The Dayaks, known as heads cutters, are native to Borneo. His skill with machetes is famous and feared. In the not too distant beheaded his enemies with a clean cut flush with the shoulders in the belief that the soul of these increase their strength. Currently, these methods are no longer common, with the occasional exception of tribal clashes. However, the Dayaks who live further away from civilization, in remote areas of the island, still can cause chills, as happened in 2001, when more than 2,000 members of the ethnic group were decapitated mature in clashes that lasted months.

Although most conflict zones were located approximately 200 kilometers from where I lived, tension spread to our village. The fear of being attacked became our main concern. The men stood guard day and night. Even I slept with a machete next to my bed and my passport and money ready in case he had to flee. But as I told my family when I was advised to leave the country, "while the Dayaks do not run, me neither."

In the fifties, the famous paleontologist Louis Leakey excavated in Africa in order to find some answers about human origins. His research led to three women to study the behavior of great apes in the wild, which in theory would help to understand the behavior of prehistoric man. In 1960, Jane Goodall began her study of chimpanzees of Gombe (Tanzania). In 1966, Dian Fossey first saw the mountain gorillas of Rwanda and Zaire. In 1972, anthropologist Birute Galdikas first saw the orangutans in the rainforests of Borneo. Studies of these three women revealed the hitherto unknown lives of these primates and the similarities between their behavior and activities with those of humans. In all three cases, studies continue and are a source of inspiration for many other scientists.

I, as a veterinary degree in Barcelona and with a masters in wildlife medicine at the University of London, came to Borneo in late 1999 to work on a newly built rehab orphaned orangutans confiscated, The Orangutan Care Center and Quarantine . Birute Galdikas established the Orangutan Foundation International in 1986, and since then, this organization has carried out conservation projects, education and research. One project was the creation of the center where I worked for five years. My work ranges from medical care orangutans to the organization of the clinic, a laboratory building, training of caregivers, veterinary students and natives coordinating practices of foreign volunteers and even work as a GP Native Village.

'Mawar' and 'Yoris' must spend a minimum of three weeks of quarantine. Between the second and third days undergo a thorough review. The exam includes blood tests, stool, urine test for tuberculosis, malaria and hepatitis B, the introduction of a microchip, taking body measurements and a treatment for worms. The baby orangutans are suffering more illnesses, especially due to respiratory and intestinal problems, ie, colds and diarrhea. Having been captured very young age, their immune system is very fragile and very susceptible. But as they grow become strong and rarely fall ill. Except for wild orangutans, which require anesthesia to be manipulated, orangutans that have spent time in captivity are relatively easy to handle.

In the rehabilitation center, almost all orangutans are young and have less than eight years, but sometimes we get injured adults. On one occasion we were told that there was an orangutan roaming the streets of Pangkalan Bun, a town about 20 minutes from our center. Upon arrival it gave me goosebumps. An adult male was sitting in the middle of the street surrounded by more than 200 people. He looked tired. It took two anesthetic darts with a blowgun shooting to transport it to the rehabilitation center. Luckily we arrived in time to save him from certain death. Although we will never know what I was looking for, it is likely that habitat loss and hunger forced him to approach his greatest enemy, man. We put the name of the street where we can find it, Wijaya, which coincidentally means "victory" in Indonesian. Weeks later, Wijaya was reintroduced in a protected forest area.

From the fourth or fifth day of the arrival of the new orangutan, and if they are healthy, caregivers responsible for quarantine begin to take a few hours a day to the forest-nursery located near downtown. During this period, the personality caregivers and ability value of each of them. Having been captured very young and have spent most of their time in cages or tied without access to trees, are inexperienced individuals who barely know what to do in the wild. Yoris Mawar and gain confidence every day to climb trees and begin the long process of rehabilitation, which will last years before returning poderles freedom. With the company of other orangutans and their carers, learning to play what they will to survive in the forest.

Orangutans, along with their African cousins, gorillas, chimpanzees and bonobos, are the group of apes. Humans are part of the same family as the great apes, the Hominidae. No wonder, then, that these apes babies reminded both human infants. In fact, the DNA of chimpanzees and bonobos is equal to 98.4% of humans, and the difference in our DNA from that of gorillas and orangutans is only 2.3% and 4% respectively. The physical differences between humans and apes are almost nonexistent, and although there have been many experiments to measure the intelligence of these primates and its similarity to that of humans, it has not reached any definitive conclusion about his intelligence and emotions.

Orangutans are the most difficult to study primates in the wild due to their arboreal habits and semi-solitary life. The orangutan Unlike their African cousins ??not only by his red hair, but also for their behavior. As the only Asian higher ape, is also the only one who spends most of the day at the top of the trees in the dense tropical jungle, in whose glasses make nests for sleeping. Adult males live alone, and females reproduce only once every six or seven years, caring for their young until they are back in mating season, making the orangutan in the species with a longer interval between births of all higher primates. The fact that orangutans are living alone and silent animals (except for the vocalizations of adult males dominant-long-calls-which serve to warn of their presence to others of their kind) makes studies of this species be very arduous and frustrating.

The education of the young rests entirely on a single individual, the mother. The first year of life, the pups are kept clinging to her for protection and care. At the end of the first year start eating some solid obtained from her mother when she feeds. A year and a half from venturing to separate from the mother, but kept a foot or a hand gripped her. During the next two years are separated from it without losing sight. Even at this age continue to sleep with her in the nest being built each night for overnight. After six or seven years, the mother begins to force them to sleep alone. The mother will soon be receptive to mate again, and the dominant male in their territory knows.

When a male a female shows interest and it is accepted, the courtship lasts a few days, during which the couple travels together repeatedly mating. When the time of separation, he continues his way to one direction and she on the other. Nine months after a new baby born to occupy the attention of the mother. The first calf follow its mother at a distance and it will take less and less of it to signify that it is time for full independence. Move, feed and survive in the rainforests requires a kind of size of an orangutan to take over only a baby every time. Nor can they afford to live in groups, like chimps and gorillas, because the distribution of food in the jungle is very scattered and not enough to feed a community. In tropical forests no distinct seasons for flowering and fruiting. Part of learning for the youth of an orangutan includes knowing where and when the trees bear fruit. It's as if they made a mental map of the area where they live memorizing every corner of the forest so that they know when the fruits are ripe. 60% of the diet of an orangutan is fruit, the other 40% includes tender leaves and roots, insects, flowers, bamboo, bark and tree sap, honey and mushrooms.

'Mawar' and 'Yoris' gradually lose their fear and make their first trips between the branches of the trees, but always with the security provided by the closeness of the caregiver. The wound healed quickly with Mawar cures daily. She does not complain and look carefully as if to learn how. In fact, not even touched the bandage, which is unusual: orangutans are not the best when it comes to patients bandages as his skill with hands and feet allowed them off in record time.

After three weeks, and Yoris Mawar no longer look anything like orangutans scary the first day. Now crying claiming their milk bottles. They enjoy playing time in the trees and wild fruits they offer, but still require attention by his caretaker.

Borneo is one of the 17,000 islands that form the archipelago of Indonesia, and along with North Sumatra, is one of only two places in the world where you can find wild orangutans in the wild, the last of his kind. Indonesia is one of the countries with the world's natural wealth. It has the largest tropical forest after the Amazon and the Congo, and develops and inhabits them one of the greatest diversity of plants and animals known in the world. 100 years ago, forests covered 170 million hectares. Currently there are only 97 million, and falling at a rate of two million a year because of the uncontrolled cutting of trees, either for timber for furniture, pulp and paper production in order to use the land to grow palm oil. Another activity that causes irreparable damage is the search for gold, which not only destroys the forest areas which establish mining towns, but also pollutes rivers with mercury used to separate gold nuggets sandy bottom. To all this must be added the natural disasters, such as fire nearly yearlong affecting Borneo in 1982 and which burned more than four million hectares of forest, a fire that was considered the largest forest fire the history so far. In 1997, another fire broke that record. The combination of massive deforestation, cultivation techniques of burning and clearing, environmental changes such as those caused by El Niño and the long periods of drought were the basic ingredients for these natural disasters. Indonesia also boasts two major titles: that of being one of the most populous countries, with over 200 million people, and being one of the most corrupt. Both factors have a negative impact on the conservation of its rich natural habitat.

Orangutans, along with other animals and plants of this rich archipelago, many of them unique in the world, are on the verge of extinction. All have lived among us in a natural balance that during the last century is breaking because of ignorance and greed.

The Orangutan Foundation International was established in 1986 by Birute Galdikas. This NGO is dedicated not only to the defense of orangutans and the habitat in which they live, but also create job opportunities for local communities, environmental conservation teaches school children both Indonesian and American and European supports various field scientific studies and is active in reforestation and conservation of degraded national parks like Tanjung National Park Putin. My stay of nearly five years at the Orangutan Care Center and Quarantine has been the most difficult and yet most rewarding of my life. Neither documentaries or reading, or the advice of some colleagues were sufficient to prepare myself before I had to go in my first two years in Borneo, during which he lived and worked in the center and fed me monotonously white on rice , chutneys and salted fish fried vegetables with occasional samples.

A final medical examination ends the quarantine period and Yoris Mawar, to be included in one of the groups of orangutans residents of the same age, which could be compared with the child first goes to daycare. The process of introducing a new group with different caregivers supposed them some stress, but the love of her foster mothers and interaction with other individuals allows them to overcome their initial fears. During the next few years will live in groups of 10 to 15 orangutans of age, following a daily routine: breakfast of fruits and vegetables at seven in the morning departure to the forest-nursery at eight back to their cages-bedroom to two p.m.; food at three milk bottle at four. Younger feed on milk and fruit as hungry and sleep in baskets near their carers, who are organized in shifts to stay overnight.

The rest of caregivers cleaned the cages before leaving and empty rice sacks give the orangutans, who use them as beds for sleeping. At five in the afternoon, just before sunset, in the center and not hear anything but the cicadas and the occasional hum of one of the orangutans, already fast asleep. As they get older group will change until they reach the age where they can be reintroduced into the wild, which were uprooted when her mother was killed and they always belonged.

Sipadan Permits

To preserve the island , a new permit system to limit the maximum number of divers to 120 per day.

It is advisable to book the permit to Sipadan in advance as only a lucky few can get to dive in Sipadan , especially in high season.

From January 1, 2005 , no tourist resorts in Sipadan , all were transferred to Mabul Kapalai .

Most of the beaches are no-go areas due to the military presence.

Sipadan Island is open to divers and visitors from 6am to 4pm.

The history of Sipadan

In 1933 , the small island of Sipadan was declared a bird sanctuary and early this decade was closed to tourist resorts .
Since the 70s the nearby island of Mabul accept immigrants from the Philippines. They are villagers and fishermen.

In the past, Sipadan was the center of disputed territory between Indonesia and Malaysia. In late 2002 , the International Court of Justice , gave the island to Malaysia.

The April 23, 2000 , 21 people were kidnapped by the Filipino terrorist group Abu Sayyaf. Finally , all the victims were released .

Since then, the Malaysian military army protects the area.

In late 2004 , all resorts in Sipadan were closed and moved to the island of Mabul .

From April 1, 2008 , the permit system Sabah Park allows only 120 divers per day.

The Tribe of the Iban. Sarawak. Borneo. Malasya

We are located in Southeast Asia on the island of Borneo , the third largest island in the world in terms of size, shared by Malaysia, Brunei and Indonesia , to go to meet the Ibam , distributed in the Malay of the island, to further divided into two regions Sabah or North Borneo and Sarawak , whose capital, Cuching , will be our starting point.

The Iban are a number of tribes spread over the jungles of Borneo , vertebrate rivers around , trying to maintain a lifestyle ancestral .
The Jungle in this area is one of the most dense in the world , consists of tropical rainforests that harbor many plant and animal species , one of the most important the Orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus ) or Man of the Forest ( the Malay Orang Hutam ) which finds one of its last strongholds global and wild species .
The importance of this ape with reddish hair and long arms who serve perfectly to scroll through the trees , where they spend most of time, still , among the great apes , the most arboreal , lies in its remarkable intelligence , is one of the few animals that can use tools provided regularly for food , in its scarcity, since it is in danger of extinction, the instability of their populations, as they depend largely on the conservation of their habitat is made , the tropical rainforests, which like the Amazon in South America, are under constant and indiscriminate logging , and illegal capture by poachers to sell them as pets.
Aware of this, the Malays built the center Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation in the jungle near the city of Sandakan.

In this environment, as we said , are the various branches of the Tribe of Ibam , from which we can learn more if you visit the museum Sarawak Cultural Village , but it's best to live with them if only for a day and a night to observe something of their way of life , as they use the blowgun which used to hunt or fish , I use plants give the environment, as they build their houses , with which they perform their craft items , etc..

The town I'm visiting is located along the Rio Lemanak . The arrival to a village Ibam , how could it be otherwise , it is across the river in a boat with handmade long wooden jungle trees abundant , directs an older woman , an expert in interpreting the bluster the river, its currents and especially sand banks can beaching the boat. At the helm , in the back of the boat , his grandson , who plays every gesture of the woman and turns to right or sinister depending on the order.

The river is not very deep but low bravo , dragging pieces of trunks, branches and leaves and sometimes disrupt shipping is dangerous , which puts a bit of adventure in our expedition , we see people fishing , caught on the edge with one hand and holding a sort of pot in the other. After thirty-five minutes we arrived at a pier built in the lower part of the town , where we expect a woman with traditional gong warning the inhabitants of the area that we have reached , the first to appear to welcome us , are as always , children , young people and then finally the older of the tribe.

The village is on high, to prevent the river floods every few minutes drive , and the houses are supported on piles for the rainwater , so abundant in such tropical forests, where moisture permanently round 90% , with run underneath the mud generated , as well as leave room for pigs and chickens swarm eating all kinds of bugs and constitute the first line of defense so they do not get inside of buildings where people live . Striking a large wooden building , very large and elongated , or called Longhouse longhouse , around which are structured the other buildings in the village.

This communal house consists of two distinct parts. The Ruai or communal hallway , speaking , smoked , relationships are made , you can play, do arts and crafts or pooling the important things in the community , but also for parties, dances and rituals of the community. Throughout this communal hallway open doors to the "rooms " private family , where they can live up to many people in the same family: parents, children and grandparents. In these spaces, kitchen , eating and sleeping , and you can only enter if you are invited , but common areas you can move at any time.

They can live more than 150 people in this Loghouse , governed by a Tuai Rumah or tribal chief , its own laws and traditions that attempt to maintain their ritual dances..
Their way of life is based on hunting and gathering, but they also have plantations and domestic livestock are riding between civilization and the jungle, something very similar to what happens in the Brazilian Amazon called Caboclos.
Until 1888 these tribes cut off the heads of their enemies and hung on the ceiling of Ruai.
There is a very characteristic feature of the Ibam , tattoos . The tattoo is an integral part of their culture , a ritual specifically related to spiritual beliefs , these tattoos are known throughout the world although it is not known even locate on a map the island of Borneo .

Indeed , with the fashion of tattooing the body prevailing in Western societies has been little research on tribal tattoos of Borneo Ibam , which have been doing for hundreds of years , being highly sought after among others the symbol known as Pink Borneo appears to be a tattoo bearing the tattoo of the tribe Ibam as high hierarchical level , though others interpret that the flower tattoo indicating Borneo is the passage from childhood to maturity and others that it is a symbol of power within the tribe . In any event, the technique apparently is tattooed with two rods one with needles in T -shaped tip and the other to strike the rod carrying the needles and go tattoo.

Another tattoo on the most widely speculated Borneo is the Scorpion . This symbol , sometimes also known as Kala , was observed mainly in the designs of Charles Hose , a civil servant who worked in Borneo for 20 years and William McDougall English anthropologist who published in 1923 a book on the Tribes Borneo pagan . It appears that the Ibam Scorpion is a Sui generis interpretation of the legendary dog / dragon associated with the protection of malevolent spirits .
Anyway, one thing is sure , I've been with Ibam and I can ensure that women of the tribe did not have tattoos and some men have practically the whole body tattooed.
